[ARCHIVED] Live birds and hayride tours at Ironhouse

Seeing hawks, owls and other local raptors soaring through the sky is a natural wonder and an everyday experience for those who just keep a lookout in the skies. To cap off Oakley’s weeklong celebration of science, Ironhouse Sanitary District and Delta Science Center will be giving people a chance to see these birds up close and personal with a live bird show on April 15.

The event coordinators of this science week activity have invited local non-profit Lindsay Wildlife Experience of Walnut Creek to bring some of their birds to show off. Lindsay’s team of experienced wildlife professionals will be on hand talk about the birds, their life in the wild and important things that kids want to know, like how big a hawk’s talons really are and are owls really that wise?

The April 15 event will also include information on other animals around the Delta that live right next door to many of us, but are rarely seen.

Other activities include hayride tours of the Ironhouse Sanitary District’s award-winning technologically advanced Water Recycling Facility. As well as a look at the equipment that help the Sanitary District keep the environment safe.

Diablo Water District will be offering information on water conservation and ideas on natural gardening to help save water.

The folks from the Contra Costa County Community Warning System program will also be on hand to give out information about how the warning system works in case of a local disaster.

Crafting activities will also be available for the children to work on while waiting for the bird show and tours.

The event will be held at the Ironhouse Sanitary District main offices, 450 Walnut Meadows Drive in Oakley. Those coming in off Oakley’s Main Street will want to turn onto Districts Way, across from Rose Avenue, follow the road under the train tracks and to the stop sign, where they will make a left. The event will take place from 10 am to 1 pm.
